The Devonshire Terrace library (1844)

367 titles in 1669 volumes found

Total value of sold titles: £332. 10s.

In 1844 Dickens travelled to Italy and rented out his then-residence at 1 Devonshire Terrace, London. An inventory of the library, completed by 27 May 1844, formed part of the rental agreement with Mrs Sophia Onslow, and was later reproduced as an appendix to Volume 4 of the Pilgrim Edition of the Letters of Charles Dickens, edited by Kathleen Tillotson and published by the Clarendon Press in 1977. That appendix forms the basis of this listing, but few details are given in the original inventory and many items are grouped under vague titles such as "divers" or "sundry" books so it is impossible to accurately identify the complete contents of the library.
