Henry Sotheran's Valuation (circa 1871)

975 titles in 2919 volumes found

Total value of sold titles: £1233. 2s.

In 1857 Dickens moved from Tavistock House, Bloomsbury, to his 'dream home', Gad's Hill Place, Higham, Kent, where he lived until his death on 9 June 1870. The library was inherited by his eldest son, Charles Jr. (known as Charley), who also purchased Gad's Hill at auction and lived there until 1879. A valuation of the library was at some point carried out by Henry Sotheran, and may or may not be connected with the 1878 sale. This valuation, now in the Beinecke Library collection, is unfortunately undated but the latest identified works date from 1871 so it cannot be earlier than this. There are significant differences between the contents of the library in this valuation and in the Stonehouse Catalogue, suggesting the 1878 sale did not include the complete library. This list is not complete as some of Sotheran's brief entries remain unidentified or illegible, and in several cases additional titles are indicated within an entry simply as '&c. &c.'. Many of the listed titles are not explictly recorded by Sotheran but their presence has been inferred by comparing the unidentified entries with the same location in CD Junior's catalogue records.
