Playscript for 'Turning the Tables' by John Poole, around 1850. One of a set of four prompt books, the other three of which were certainly used by Charles Dickens as acting copies. The book is inscribed on the fly-leaf in the hand of Thomas Coe, 'Charles Dickens Esquire. 1850' and below this appears the signature 'Syd S. Dickens Gad's Hill June 1866', the book is interleaved with manuscript notes and stage directions all in the hand of Coe whose signature, 'Thos. Coe Prompter 1850' appears at the end of the text. The script is in a black leather binding, housed in a slipcase titled 'Amateur Theatricals', with three other playscripts also used by Dickes: 'Animal Magnetism', 'A Wonderful Woman' and 'Used Up' ([lib]5177, [lib]5178 and [lib]5169). These prompt-books were given by Georgina Hogarth to Sir Henry Fielding Dickens and sold by his son, Admiral Sir Gerald Dickens, at Sotheby's on 31 May 1949, the purchaser being the Comte de Suzannet. The annotations in the book are by Thomas Coe: an actor, stage director and stage manager and member of the Haymarket Company (1846-1876). Gift of La Comtesse de Suzannet, 1971.
