This is 'No Thoroughfare' - the last Christmas number to which Dickens contributed. It was transformed into a play by Wilkie Collins for Mr. Fechter, with a view to which it had been planned originally.

With respect to French Translations, Dickens thus writes to Forster from Paris (30 Jan. 1856): 'I have arranged with the French bookselling house to receive, by monthly payments of £40, the sum of £440 for the right to translate all my books: that is, what they call my Romances, and what I call my Stories.' * * * In Forster's words, 'He wrote an address for the edition in which he praised the liberality of his publishers [Hachette], and expressed his pride in being so presented to the French people whom he sincerely loved and honoured.'
