Presentation copy from the Author; inscribed, 'Charles Dickens, with the respects of Nathaniel Ingersoll Bowditch. Boston, Feb. 18, 1857.' This extensive collection of Surnames, which includes some of the most Remarkable, Out-of-the-way, and Comical, ever borne by human beings, was used by Mr. Dickens, as is evident from his marks. His own list (see Forster's Life, ii. 384-6) contains none so curious, particularly those, and the remarks thereon at pp. 14-17, which he notes to 'quote'.
