Presentation copy from the Author; inscribed, 'Charles Dickens, Esquire, from his friend and admirer, Fitz-Greene Halleck. New York, North America, 6th June, 1842.' He is mentioned in one of Dickens's letters from America. Mr. Forster says (Life, vol. ii. 466) he is 'author of one of the most delightful poems ever written about Burns,' which, consisting of 38 four-line stanzas, is included in the above volume.
'The poems of Fitz-Greene Halleck, although limited in quantity, are perhaps the best known and most cherished, especially in the latitude of New York, of all American verses... The school-boy and the old knickerbocker both know them by heart, etc.' - H. T. Tuckerman.
