I mislaid it (with ''The Christmas Carol'') for three whole years: then had it bound, and mislaid it again, at the bottom of a packing case, for two years more, and now venture to send it you in the hope that a Russian translation of the ''Cricket'' is not on your shelves, and that you will take the gift from me, as it is meant, for ''auld lang syne.''
